Benchmark Sat

Benchmark Sat

2013

Inspired by victory podiums, Benchmark Sat pays tribute to the former National Stadium, a site of sporting, cultural, and national milestones.

From the front and back, missing planks reveal the Chinese numerals “一”, “二” and “三” for first, second and third place; from above, the Roman numerals “I”, “II” and “III” appear. The three-tiered bench invites sitting and play, letting users choose their own level—setting a personal benchmark rather than competing for first.

Made from wood salvaged from the National Stadium, it was exhibited at Dhoby Ghaut Green, later housed at URA, and will end at the Singapore Sports Hub. Commissioned for Bench, a URA/FARM/SFIC project with 25 designers and artists.
