Every Bit of Joy was a live presentation of sand mandala-making and photography in the heart of Shibuya, Tokyo. It was an ode to the unhurried craft of creating a sand mandala: each grain placed with care, with the knowledge that the work would eventually be erased. That tension between making and letting go became the heart of the exhibition, reflecting impermanence, change and the possibility of joy within both. The masthead mirrors the process.

Each coloured grain, carefully placed and then released, builds a field of colour while suggesting the fleeting nature of our own experiences.

As the “bits” spread across the design, the composition becomes lighter and more open. A serif typeface and cascading layout create a sense of movement, while the dispersing forms invite a pause within the pace of the city.

The poster centres on the monk’s hand at work, holding the tool used to form the mandala. The act of making carries the meaning: concentration, impermanence and an acceptance that what is carefully created may also be released.
